Abstract

THIS REPORT GIVES THE PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP ORGANISED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF COST 641. TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE NATURAL BANK FILTRATION AND WATER TREATMENT, CONTAMINATED GROUND WATERS, BIOTRANSFORMATION AND ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE. A MAIN THEME WAS THE QUALITY OF RAW WATER USED FOR PRODUCTION OF DRINKING WATER. INCREASING LEVELS OF ORGANIC MICROPOLLUTANTS WERE REPORTED IN BOTH GROUND AND SURFACE WATER. ATTENTION WAS DRAWN TO LOW MOLECULAR CHLORINATED COMPOUNDS AND CHELATING AGENTS. SOURCES OF CONTAMINATION SUCH AS DUMPING SITES, LEACHING OIL RESERVOIRS AND LAND FILLS REQUIRE CAREFUL OBSERVATION. MONITORING PROGRAMMES FOR LEACHING WATER, SURFACE AND GROUND WATER SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED PARTICULARLY IN URBANIZED AREAS.
