Abstract

THIS REPORT GIVES THE PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP OF WORKING PARTY I OF COST 641. INTEREST FOCUSSED ON SAMPLING STRATEGY, SAMPLE HOMOGENIZATION AND SAMPLE CLEAN-UP FOR THE ANALYSIS OF MICROPULLUTANTS. THE SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OF POLLUTANTS IN SEDIMENT, FOGWATER, GROUNDWATER AND AIR-BORNE PARTICLES WAS REPORTED. A METHOD OF DRYING AND GRINDING SEDIMENT SAMPLES WAS PRESENTED, WHICH PERMITTED THE PREPARATION OF REPRESENTATIVE SUB-SAMPLES OF ABOUT 10 MG FROM AN ORIGINAL 1KG SAMPLE. LABORATORY DEMONSTRATIONS INCLUDED AN AUTOMATED CLEAN-UP PROCEDURE INVOLVING ON-LINE PRE-COLUMN SWITCHING AND LC-ANALYSIS, THE USE OF LOW AND HIGH RESOLUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY, HEAD-SPACE GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY AND THE USE OF PERSONAL COMPUTERS. THE USE OF ROBOTICS FOR CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES IN ANALYSIS WAS RECOMMENDED. THE NEED FOR ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN SUCH AS PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES WAS STRESSED.
