Abstract

FLUORESCENCE BEHAVIOUR WAS INVESTIGATED IN SPRUCES TO DETECT PHYSIOLOGICAL DISTURBANCES FOLLOWING AN EXPOSURE TO MINERAL DEFICIENCY (MAGNESIUM OR POTASSIUM). THE FLUORESCENCE ANALYSIS, USING THE QUENCHING COEFFICIENTS, DEALS WITH THE SLOW PHASE OF THE KAUTSKY EFFECT. THE DEFICIENCY TREATMENTS WERE STOPPED BEFORE ANY VISIBLE SYMPTOMS WERE OBSERVED ON THE NEEDLES. OTHER PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS (WATER CONTENT, CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT AND OXYGEN EVOLUTION) MEASURED ON THE NEEDLES, WERE USED AS A CONTROL OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL STATE OF THE TREES. RECOVERY PHASES OF PHYSIOLOGICAL DAMAGES WERE FOLLOWED FOR ONE MONTH. AN OBVIOUS EFFECT ON THE CHLOROPHYLL FLUORESCENCE (DECREASE IN THE VITALITY INDEX IN THE PHOTOCHEMICAL QUENCHING AND INCREASE IN THE NON-PHOTOCHEMICAL ONE,) WAS OBSERVED IN YOUNGER NEEDLES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MG DEFICIENT TREATMENT, WHEREAS LITTLE EFFECT WAS DETECTED IN OTHER PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS. IN THE SAME WAY, A RECOVERY AFTER THE EXPOSURE TO K DEFICIENCY WAS DETECTED BY FLUORESCENCE. THESE RESULTS INDICATE THAT CHLOROPHYLL FLUORESCENCE COULD BE A GOOD QUALITATIVE INDICATOR OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL STATE OF PLANTS. FIELD EXPERIMENTS ARE NECESSARY.
