Abstract

THIS REPORT GIVES THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE 6TH DISCUSSION MEETING OF WORKING PARTY 2 OF COST 611. TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE:- - THE APPLICATION OF RATES AND MECHANISMS OF ATMOSPHERIC REACTIONS TO DEPOSITION OF NITRATE NO(3). - HETEROGENEOUS CHEMICAL REACTIONS INVOLVING NO(X) AND RELATED PROCESSES WHICH CONVERT GAS PHASE NO(X) AND NO(Y) TO LIQUID PHASE NO(3). - THE AQUEOUS LIQUID PHASE - THE INTERACTION OF NO(X) WITH ORGANIC SPECIES. THERE IS AGREEMENT ON THE NO(3)+ ORGANIC RATE CONSTANTS. THE NATURE OF THE REACTION PRODUCTS UNDER ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS NEEDS FURTHER STUDY. THE NATURE OF THE REACTION OF NO(3) WITH CLOSED SHELL INORGANIC MOLECULES APPEARS TO BE RELATIVELY SLOW. FAST REACTIONS OCCUR BETWEEN NO(3) AND ATOMS AND RADICALS. A COMPILATION OF THE RATE CONSTRAINTS IS INCLUDED IN THE REPORT.
