Abstract

THIS REPORT GIVES THE PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP OF WORKING PARTY 4 OF COST 641. THE NEED FOR STANDARDISED TESTS TO ASSESS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND THE CONTROL OF MICROPOLLUTANTS RELEASED BY INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES WERE DISCUSSED. SESSIONS WERE DEVOTED TO AEROBIC SYSTEMS, ANAEROBIC SYSTEMS, BIODEGRADATION AND OTHER TESTS, DETERGENTS, COMBINED BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL REMOVAL AND CALCULATIONS AND MODELLING. BIODEGRADATION WITH BOTH ACTIVATED SLUDGE AND BIOFILMS WERE REPORTED, BIOFILMS BEING MORE EFFICIENT FOR DEGRADATION OF PHENOXY ACIDS, DUE TO A COMBINATION OF AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC PROCESSES. DEGRADATION OF CHLORINATED PHENOLS WAS SHOWN TO BE BY FACULTATIVE ANAEROBIC MICRO-ORGANISMS, THE BACTERIA BEING SENSITIVE TO CHLORO-PHENOLS AS TOXIC AGENTS UNLESS SOME ABSORBING MATERIAL WAS ADDED. REMOVAL MECHANISMS WERE STUDIED USING LINDANE AND PHENOXY ACIDS. CHLORINATED ETHERS SHOWED PARTIAL ABSORPTION ON ACTIVE CARBON.
