Abstract

AFTER A SUMMARY REVIEW OF THE VARIOUS EEC DIRECTIVES RELATING TO CHEMICALS CONTROL IN THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND PRODUCT SAFETY THE PRESENTATION DISCUSSES SOME TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DIRECTIVE ON DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES (79.831/EEC) AND THE DIRECTIVE ON DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES DISCHARGED IN THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT (76/446/EEC). IN THIS CONTEXT, PURPOSE AND PREPARATION OF THE EUROPEAN INVENTORY ON EXISTING COMMERCIAL CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES (EINECS) ARE TREATED IN SOME DETAIL AND PRACTICAL PROBLEMS ARE ILLUSTRATED ON THE EXAMPLE OF A FEW REPRESENTATIVE SUBSTANCES. FINALLY, A FEW SUGGESTIONS ARE PUT FORWARD WITH REGARD TO THE FUTURE USE OF THE EINECS INVENTORY IN THE SYSTEMATIC EVALUATION OF EXISTING CHEMICALS.
