Abstract

SEVERAL AREAS OF REGULATORY POLICY IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY IN RELATION TO SAFETY OF CHEMICALS REQUIRE TOXICOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS. THESE INCLUDE : - CLASSIFICATION AND LABELLING OF DANGEROUS CHEMICALS AND PREPARATIONS; - LIMITATIONS OF USE OF DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES AND PREPARATIONS; - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES; - PREVENTION OF MAJOR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL ACCIDENTS; - AIR AND WATER POLLUTION; - HANDLING OF TOXIC WASTES; - PUBLIC HEALTH MEASURES RELATED TO DANGEROUS CHEMICALS. THE COUNCIL ADOPTED IN 1986 A PROGRAMME OF ACTION ON TOXICOLOGY FOR HEALTH PROTECTION. THE MEASURES, AIMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS ARE REVIEWED. A DETAILED EXAMPLE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF TOXICOLOGICAL DATA FOR NEW CHEMICALS AND THEIR USE FOR CLASSIFICATION AND LABELLING ON THE BASIS OF THE 1979 WITH SOME TOXICOLOGY ASPECTS CURRENTLY EXPLORED TO MODIFY THE ABOVE DIRECTIVE ENHANCING THE TOXICOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS.
