Abstract

THE EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL HAZARDOUS WASTE OF 2,4,5-TRICHLOROPHENOL SOLIDIFIED IN CEMENT ON WATER RESISTANCE AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES SUCH AS BULK AND PYCNOMETRIC DENSITY, PORE VOLUME AND PORE DISTRIBUTION WAS INVESTIGATED BY MERCURY INTRUSION POROSIMETRY. VARIABLE AMOUNTS OF 2,4,5-TCP AT A MAXIMUM CONCENTRATION OF 16.5 WT% DECREASED THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, DENSITY AND PORE VOLUME VALUES AS MEASURED ON NEAT CEMENT SAMPLES PREPARED WITH THE SAME WATER-TO-CEMENT RATIO W/C=0.55. THE ANALYTICAL PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED. IT EMPLOYS SUPELCO SPE LC-18 CARTRIDGES IN EXTRACTION OF 2,4,5-TCP FROM AQUEOUS LEACHATE SAMPLES. COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS RESULTS ON 1,3,5-TRICHLOROBENZENE, THE LEACHING EXPERIMENTS INDICATED A VERY WEAK RETENTION OF 2,4,5-TRICHLOROPHENOL IMMOBILISED IN CEMENT.
