Abstract

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS HAVE BECOME A ROUTINE IN MANY ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES IN THE FORM OF LABORATORY AUTOMATION, NC MACHINING, CAD/CAM-CIM TECHNIQUES AND FINITE ELEMENTS METHODS. THIS DEVELOPMENT HAS GENERATED A STRONG DEMAND FOR SYSTEMS WHICH PRESENT MATERIALS DATA IN COMPUTER READABLE FORM OR IN A DATABASE. ADVANCED DATA SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR DESIGN, MATERIALS SELECTION, CUTTING VALUES AND CORROSION. THERE IS A TREND TOWARDS THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH KNOWLEDGE PROCESSING AND THEIR INTEGRATION INTO NETWORKS. THIS CAN ONLY BE SUCCESSFUL IF ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDISATION WHICH HAS BEGUN IN EUROPE AND THE USA.
