Abstract

PROJECT COST 501/CCR-2 WAS CONCERNED WITH THE ASSESSMENT OF A NUMBER OF COATING AND CLADDING MATERIALS AND APPLIED COATINGS TO TYPICAL HT-ALLOYS, WITH RESPECT TO THEIR THERMAL FATIGUE RESISTANCE AND THEIR CORROSION AND CREEP BEHAVIOUR IN MIXED SULPHIDIZING/CARBURIZING/OXIDIZING ATMOSPHERES IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE TYPICALLY ENCOUNTERED IN COAL CONVERSION PLANT. ANY OF THE MATERIALS TESTED UNDERGO SEVERE CORROSION ATTACK IN TERMS OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL SULPHIDATION AND ALSO CARBURIZATION IF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE SUCH THAT THE FORMATION OF FE- AND NI-RICH SULPHIDES IS POSSIBLE. UNDER THESE CONDITIONS SOME LIMITED CORROSION PROTECTION MAY BE ACHIEVED BY A PRE-OXIDATION TREATMENT OF FECRA1Y-STEELS AND COATINGS. THE THERMAL STRESSES RESULTING FROM THE THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT MISMATCH BETWEEN SUBSTRATE AND CLAD MATERIALS CAN LEAD TO REMARKABLE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF THE SPECIMENS AND LOCAL DECOHESION OF THE CLADDING. PLASMA-SPRAYED FECRA1Y- AND CEO2-SOL-GEL COATINGS ON ALLOY 800H AND HP40NB EXHIBITED FAIRLY GOOD TF-RESISTANCE, PACK-A1 COATINGS SHOWED A STRONG TENDENCY FOR CRACK FORMATION. ELECTRODEPOSITED COCRA1Y COATINGS DETERIORATED VERY RAPIDLY UNDER CYCLING CONDITIONS.
