Abstract

THE PURITY OF SEVEN NITRO-POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS HAS BEEN DETERMINED IN AN INTER-LABORATORY EXERCISE INVOLVING TEN LABORATORIES OF THE EC MEMBER STATES. THE ANALYTICAL METHODS USED INCLUDED GAS LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY, HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY. THE CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE AND EXPERIMENTS ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. THE AIM WAS TO CERTIFY THESE AS REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR CALIBRATION OF ANALYTICAL APPARATUS AND METHODS AND FOR THE STUDY OF THEIR POSSIBLE CARCINOGENICITY AND MUTAGENICITY. THESE COMPOUNDS ARE KNOWN TO BE FORMED DURING PETROL AND DIESEL FUEL CONSUMPTION AND ARE ALSO FOUND IN CIGARETTE SMOKE AND ELSEWHERE.
