Abstract

THE OPTICAL TRANSFER FUNCTION (OTF) OF A LENS IS USED WIDELY AS AN INDICATOR FOR THE QUALITY IN REPRODUCTION OF IMAGES FOR BOTH INDIVIDUAL OPTICAL LENSES AND LARGER OPTICAL AND ELECTRO-OPTICAL SYSTEMS. THE REPORT IS THE SYNTHESIS OF THE OUTCOME OF AN INTERNATIONAL INTERCOMPARISON OF THE MEASUREMENT OF THE OPTICAL TRANSFER FUNCTION. OF THE FOUR LABORATORIES TAKING PART IN THE EXERCISE, TWO EMPLOYED IMAGE SCANNING INSTRUMENTS IN THEIR MEASUREMENTS WHEREAS THE OTHER TWO USED INTERFEROMETERS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE INTERCOMPARISON HAS DEMONSTRATED THE CAPABILITY OF THE PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES TO MAKE EQUIVALENT MEASUREMENT, WITHIN THEIR UNCERTAINTIES OF MEASUREMENT. THE EXERCISE HAS IDENTIFIED SOME SOURCES OF ERROR . SOME MODIFICATIONS OF EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE HAVE BEEN UNDERTAKEN. IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT THE SCANNING AND INTERFEROMETRIC TECHNIQUES CAN PRODUCE EQUIVALENT RESULTS, WITH EQUAL ACCURACY.
