Kurzbeschreibung

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE MODULAR MULTIPROCESSOR MULTITOP, WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF THE MAJOR ASDEC-UPGRADE EXPERIMENT UNDERTAKEN BY THE MAX-PLANCK INSTITUTE FOR PLASMA PHYSICS. SINCE THE PREPROCESSING ALGORITHMS VARY GREATLY IN TERMS OF THEIR COMPUTING TIME REQUIREMENTS, IT IS AN ADVANTAGE TO HAVE A MODULAR DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM WITH SCALABLE PROCESSOR POWER. AS A RESULT OF THE INNOVATIVE ARCHITECTURE, THE TOPOLOGY OF THE PROCESSOR CONNECTIONS CAN BE ALTERED DYNAMICALLY AND THIS PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY AND EFFICIENCY. THE DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN GENERATOR AND USER ALSO PERMITS A RAPID EXCHANGE OF DATA. THE ADVANTAGES OF PARALLEL PROCESSING COMPARED WITH SEQUENTIAL PROCESSING ARE EXPLAINED WITH REGARD TO THE ACCELERATING FACTOR AND EFFICIENCY AND ITS POSITION IN THE COUPLING AND PROGRAM HIERARCHY IS DESCRIBED. THE METHOD WHICH PROVIDES THE BEST PARALLELISING FORM OF THE FAST FOURIER TRANSFORMATION WAS ESTABLISHED. IN ADDITION, A PROCESS WAS DESIGNED TO ROUND OFF MEASURING DATA AND TO REDUCE THEIR NUMBER TO THE ESSENTIAL IN ONE STEP. WITH THE AID OF BASIS SPLINES A CALCULUS OF OBSERVATIONS WAS CARRIED OUT TOO MINIMISE TRUNCATION ERRORS, WHERE ONLY LINEAR ALGEBRA OPERATIONS ARE USED WHICH ARE EASY TO PARALLELISE.
