Abstract

A HIGH-SPEED COMMUNICATION LINK BETWEEN ETHERNET AND AN IBM 4381 UNDER MVS HAS BEEN INSTALLED. THIS LINK CONSISTS OF A FIBRONICS K200 CONTROL UNIT SUPPORTED BY KNET/MVS SOFTWARE. THE K200 UNIT IS ON ONE SIDE ATTACHED TO AN IBM MULTIPLEXER CHANNEL AND ON THE OTHER SIDE TO THE ETHERNET. IT CAN EXCHANGE DATA AT A MAXIMUM RATE OF 2.5 MBIT/S. KNET/MVS IMPLEMENTS THE TCP/IP SET OF PROTOCOLS. ADDITIONAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE INTERFACES HAVE BEEN INSTALLED FOR MINI AND MICROCOMPUTERS (AT PRESENT MAINLY IBM OR COMPATIBLE PC'S AND DIGITAL MICROVAX II SYSTEMS). AN APPLICATION PROGRAMME INTERFACE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE TRANSFER OF (BINARY) DATA FROM IBM PC MEMORY TO FILES ON THE IBM 4381. PERFORMANCE DATA WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE KEYBOARD CONTROLLED FILE TRANSFER BETWEEN THE IBM 4381 ON ONE SIDE AND AN IBM PC OR A MICROVAX II AT THE OTHER SIDE, AND FOR THE TRANSFER UNDER PROGRAMME CONTROL OF DATA FROM PC MEMORY TO THE IBM 4381.
