Abstract

THE DEVELOPMENT, FABRICATION AND OPERATION CONDITIONS OF CERAMIC NUCLEAR FUELS ARE DESCRIBED AND COMPARED WITH NON-NUCLEAR HIGH TECH CERAMICS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED NUCLEAR AND NON-NUCLEAR MATERIALS NEEDS AND IS BASED ON A FEED BACK OF INFORMATION FROM FABRICATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF THE MATERIAL TO IN-SERVICE TESTING WITH POST-SERVICE ANALYSIS, MODELLING AND OPTIMATION OF MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR BY CHANGES IN THE FABRICATION METHOD. SAFE HANDLING OF THE ENTIRE FUEL CYCLE HAS BECOME MOST IMPORTANT. THE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH EXIST FOR NUCLEAR FUELS DUE TO THEIR RADIOACTIVITY. THE IMPACT OF THE EXTREME OPERATION CONDITIONS FOR NUCLEAR CERAMICS - HIGH OPERATING TEMPERATURES AS WELL AS HIGH TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS COMBINED WITH THE CONTINUOUS INGROWTH OF A LARGE NUMBER OF SOLID AND GASEOUS NEW ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS AS FISSION PRODUCTS - ON FUEL BEHAVIOUR, SPECIFICATION AND FABRICATION IS OUTLINED. RECENT INVESTIGATIONS ON ADVANCED MIXED CARBIDE AND NITRIDE FUELS FOR FAST REACTORS AND THE STATE OF ART OF THEIR FABRICATION METHODS ARE DESCRIBED AS WELL AS NEW EXPERIENCE AND DEVELOPMENT ON MOX FUEL FABRICATION.
