Abstract

THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS DESIGNED TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN THE ONE- AND TWO- INTERSTITIAL MODELS OF RADIATION DAMAGE, AND CONCLUDES THAT A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE TWO INTERSTITIAL MODEL IS VALID. IN THIS MODEL, THE MIGRATION ACTIVATION ENERGY DECREASES WITH HIGH ENERGY PARTICLE FLUX AND THE INTERACTION FIELDS BETWEEN POINT DEFECTS AND SINKS FOR POINT DEFECTS (EG DISLOCATIONS) ARE MUCH LARGER THAN PREVIOUSLY ASSUMED. AT LOW FLUX HOWEVER THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL AND THE MODIFIED MODEL WITH RESPECT TO ACTIVATION ENERGIES. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED IN THE LIGHT OF THIS MODEL.
