Abstract

LOW M TEARING MODES CAN BE STABILIZED BY A SUITABLE TAILORING OF THE CURRENT DENSITY PROFILE. SUCH A PROFILE HAS ALREADY BEEN ACHIEVED EXPERIMENTALLY WITH LOCAL ELECTRON CYCLOTRON HEATING IN T-10 AND TFR. FOR FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF ECH TO MODE CONTROL IT IS IMPORTANT TO ANALYSE WHETHER THESE RESULTS WERE A CONSEQUENCE OF PROFILE TAILORING. THE AIM OF THIS PAPER WAS TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION WITH TRANSPORT CODE SIMULATIONS OF EXPERIMENTS IN TFR. AS M=2, N=1 TEARING MODE HAS A DOMINANT ROLE IN THE OCCURRENCE OF MAJOR DISRUPTIONS, THIS MODE WAS STUDIED. THE MODE CONTROL EXPERIMENTS ON TFR WERE PERFORMED MOSTLY IN A PLASMA REGIME THAT EXHIBITED STRONG MHD ACTIVITY. DISCHARGES IN THIS REGIME WERE CHARACTERIZED BY A SAFETY FACTOR AT THE EDGE Q(A) S 3.2 . THE PAPER CONCLUDED THE SUPPRESSION OF THE MHD ACTIVITY WITH ECH OBTAINED IN THE EXPERIMENTS ON TFR CANNOT BE DUE TO THE CURRENT TAILORING ALONE. THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE STABILIZATION IS OBTAINED IN THE EXPERIMENTS FROM THE ECH EFFECT ON THE PLASMA POSITION. THE APPLICATION OF ECH ALMOST ALWAYS LED TO A HORIZONTAL OUTWARD SHIFT OF THE PLASMA, AND A CONSEQUENT INCREASE IN Q(A) AND THEREBY TO STABILIZATION OF THE MODE.
