Abstract

FIVE PAPERS WERE PRESENTED BY JET AT THIS TOKAMAK PROGRAMME WORKSHOP. THE FIRST PAPER GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF 1987 JET RESULTS FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS AND THE COMMISSIONING OF NEW SYSTEMS, INCLUDING ION CYCLOTRON RESONANCE HEATING (ICRH), TWO NEW DIAGNOSTIC MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND A PELLET INJECTOR. THE SECOND PAPER DESCRIBES THE LIDAR THOMSON SCATTERING SYSTEM, WHICH EMPLOYS TIME RESOLVED BACKWORD SCATTERING OF AN EXTREMELY SHORT RUBY LASER PULSE TO OBTAIN PROFILES OF ELECTRON TEMPERATURE AND DENSITY. THE THIRD PAPER DESCRIBES MEASUREMENT OF THE FARADAY ROTATION OF THE LASER BEAMS BY THE FAR INFRA-RED INTERFEROMETER ARRAY, TO ESTIMATE THE STRENGTH OF THE POLOIDAL MAGNETIC FIELD. THE FOURTH PAPER DESCRIBES AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN ICRH. THE LAST PAPER DISCUSSES THE PERTURBATIONS, KNOWN AS "SNAKES", WHICH APPEAR FOLLOWING PELLET INJECTION, AND THE "MONSTER SAWTOOTH" PHENOMENA WHICH APPEAR DURING ICRH.
