Abstract

PRESENT CAPABILITY FOR DIAGNOSING FAST ION AND ALPHA-PARTICLE DISTRIBUTIONS IS VERY LIMITED. A SYSTEM BASED ON COLLECTIVE THOMPSON SCATTERING IS PROPOSED. ALTHOUGH A SUFFICIENTLY POWERFUL SOURCE IS NOT AVAILABLE AT THE IDEAL WAVELENGTH IN THE FAR INFRA-RED, THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GYROTRON IN THE MILLIMETRE WAVE REGION SEEMS FEASIBLE. SYSTEM PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN ANALYSED FOR BOTH ISOTROPIC AND ANISOTROPIC FAST ION POPULATIONS. OTHER POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF THE GYROTRON INCLUDE INFORMATION ON THE VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION OF THE MAIN ION SPECIES, POSSIBLY ION TEMPERATURE, AND MEASUREMENTS OF ELECTRON THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF THE PLASMA.
