Abstract

CASTINGS OF 1.5KG AND 18G RESPECTIVELY WERE PREPARED BY MEDIUM FREQUENCY INDUCTION MELTING AND HIGH FREQUENCY LEVITATION MELTING WITH COBALT CONTENTS IN THE RANGE 0.1 TO 2.2 WT%. THE BEST HOMOGENEITY IN THE COBALT DISTRIBUTION WAS PRODUCED BY LEVITATION MELTING AND A TARGET VALUE FOR THE HOMOGENEITY OF 0.5% RELATIVE STANDARD DEVIATION ON SAMPLES OF 20MG WAS ACHIEVED FOR SOME COMPOSITIONS. THE AL-ALGCO(2) EUTECTIC IS KNOWN TO EXHIBIT "COUPLED GROWTH" AND FULLY EUTECTIC MICROSTRUCTURES WERE ONLY FOUND FOR COBALT CONTENTS IN THE RANGE 1.8 TO 2.0 WT%. ALLOYS OF THE NOMINAL EUTECTIC COMPOSITION, AL-1.0CO, CONTAINED LARGE VOLUME FRACTIONS OF PRIMARY ALUMINIUM DENDRITES. TWO-ALUMINIUM-COBALT ALLOYS (0.1 AND 1.0% CO) IN WIRE FORM HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED BY CBNM AS DOSIMETRY REFERENCE MATERIALS AND THE PREPARATION OF A BATCH OF AL-1.8CO AS A CANDIDATE EC REFERENCE MATERIAL IS PROPOSED.
