Abstract

IN THE AREA OF NUCLEAR DATA FOR STANDARDS, EFFORTS CONCENTRATED ON NEUTRON DATA, PARTICULARLY WITH REFERENCE TO 235U AND 252CF. WORK CONTINUED ON ACTINIDE DATA IN THE SUBTHERMAL NEUTRON ENERGY RANGE AND THE DETERMINATION OF NEUTRON CROSS SECTIONS OF STRUCTURAL MATERIALS IN THE RESONANCE REGION. IN FUSION TECHNOLOGY WORK CENTRED ON DATA NEEDED FOR NEUTRON TRANSPORT CALCULATIONS IN THE BLANKET CONTAINING LITHIUM AS BREEDER MATERIAL AND ON THE PREDICTION OF GAS PRODUCTION. RADIONUCLIDE METROLOGY STUDIES INCLUDED THE ALPHA-PARTICLE EMISSION PROBABILITIES IN 237NP DECAY, THE PREPARATION OF REFERENCE SOURCES EMITTING KX RAYS OF 1.5 KEV AT A CERTIFIED EMISSION RATE, THE ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX ALPHA-PARTICLE SPECTRA AND THE CALIBRATION OF AN IONISATION CHAMBER SYSTEM. THE PREPARATION OF REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ELEMENTAL URANIUM AND/OR PLUTONIUM CONTENT AND THE RELATED ISOTOPE ABUNDANCES CONTINUED. SOME OF THE MATERIALS FOR REACTOR NEUTRON DOSIMETRY ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR SALE. 425 SPECIAL NUCLEAR TARGETS WERE PREPARED CHARACTERIZED AND DELIVERED. IN THE NON-NUCLEAR AREA, ISOTOPE DILUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY (IDMS) WAS DEVELOPED AS A REFERENCE METHOD FOR TRACES OF TOXIC OR ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, SUCH AS BORON IN RYE GRASS AND LITHIUM IN HUMAN BLOOD SERUM.
