Abstract

THE PROPAGATION OF FISSION NEUTRONS IN LARGE IRON AND SODIUM BENCHMARKS WAS MEASURED USING SULPHUR, INDIUM AND GOLD ACTIVATION DETECTORS. IT WAS ALSO CALCULATED BY THE MONTE CARLO CODE MCNP IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SURFACE-SPLITTING PROCEDURE. NUCLEAR POINT-CROSS-SECTION DATA WERE TAKEN EITHER FROM ENDF/B4 OR FROM JEF1. THE ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT IN THE HIGH ENERGY RANGE, WHICH IS OF DOMINANT IMPORTANCE IN SHIELDING CALCULATIONS THE EXISTING CROSS-SECTION LIBRARIES ARE AS GOOD AS THE DEEP-PENETRATION CALCULATION METHODS APPLIED. IN THE LOWER ENERGY RANGE, WHERE NON-NEGLIGIBLE DISCREPANCIES ARE FOUND IMPROVEMENTS OF CROSS-SECTION LIBRARIES ARE NECESSARY.
