Abstract

ONE SOLUTION SUGGESTED FOR THE DISPOSAL OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE FROM NUCLEAR FISSION REACTORS HAS BEEN ITS VITRIFICATION AND STORAGE IN SUITABLE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS. PENETRATION OF GROUND WATER IS ONE POTENTIAL CAUSE OF LEAKAGE OF RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS FROM SUCH FORMATIONS, BY LEACHING AND EROSION OF MATERIAL. THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL STATE OF ACTINIDES DETERMINE THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH THE GEOMATRIX AND THE DETAILS OF THEIR MIGRATION IN NATURAL WATER-SYSTEMS. IN PARTICULAR, THEY CAN BIND WITH ORGANIC OR INORGANIC COMPOUNDING SUBSTANCES OR EVEN WITH COLLOIDAL PARTICLES. THIS STUDY HAS CONSIDERED THE INTERACTION BETWEEN AM (III), TH (IV) AND NP(V), REPRESENTING TRI-, TETRA- AND PENTAVALENT ACTINIDES, WITH HUMIC ACIDS (CARBONATE/BICARBONATE) AND COLLOIDAL SILICA. SILICIC ACID WAS DETECTED IN EVERY SYSTEM, AND WAS FOUND TO BE IN EQUILIBRIUM WITH THE COLLOIDAL PHASE PRODUCED IN SITU.
