Riassunto

COLLOIDAL ALUMINA PARTICLES IN AN AQUEOUS ENVIRONMENT CARRY A POSITIVE SURFACE CHARGE AT LESS THAN ABOUT 9 PH. THIS ALLOWS THE PARTICLES TO BIND ANIONS OF VARIOUS ORIGINS. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS RESEARCH ARE, AMONG OTHERS, TO STUDY : - ALTERATIONS OF THE COLLOID ABSORBING CAPACITY DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF TYPICAL COMPOUNDING SUBSTANCES IN NATURAL WATERS, SUCH AS HUMIC ACIDS AND CARBONATES, WHICH IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR THE MIGRATION OF RADIONUCLIDES IN THE GEOSPHERE. - THE ROLE OF THE SULPHATE ION IN THE PROCESS OF ALUMINA PRECIPITATION (FREQUENTLY USED IN CATALYSIS AND IN SEWAGE TREATMENT), AND ALSO IN ALUMINIUM CHEMISTRY IN SURFACE WATERS AFFECTED BY ACID RAIN. THE INFLUENCE OF SULPHATE AND CARBONATE IONS AND OF HUMIC ACIDS ON COLLOIDAL ALUMINA STABILITY AND ADSORPTION FEATURES HAS ALSO BEEN INVESTIGATED.
