Abstract

THIS STUDY SUMMARISES THE PRESENT REGULATORY FRAMEWORK FOR STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE IN EEC COUNTRIES. TO MEET THE BASIC RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR WASTE DISPOSAL, CRITERIA ARE SPECIFIED COVERING SITE SELECTION, REPOSITORY DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE AND WASTE ACCEPTANCE. BASIC RADIOLOGICAL CRITERIA FOR PROTECTING THE PUBLIC DURING OPERATIONAL/POST-OPERATIONAL PHASES OF A RESPOSITORY ARE EXPRESSED AS INDIVIDUAL DOSE RATE LIMIT OR RISK LIMIT. TECHNICAL CRITERAL FOR THE REPOSITORY SYSTEM VARY WIDELY DUE TO THE SITE SPECIFIC NATURE OF THESE CRITERIA. WASTE FORM ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED PARTICULARLY FOR LOW AND INTERMEDIATE LEVEL WASTES, IN COUNTRIES WHERE DISPOSAL ROUTES EXIST. WASTE FORM CRITERIA ARE GENERALLY BEING DEVELOPED ON THE BASIS OF SITE-SPECIFIC SAFETY ANALYSIS. THIS STUDY SHOWS THAT WITHIN THE EC, THERE EXISTS WIDE VARIATION IN THE APPROACH TO WASTE MANAGEMENT. IT INDICATES THAT THERE IS SCOPE FOR FURTHER JOINT DEVELOPMENT AND HARMONIZATION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT POLICIES.
