  • THE DENITRATION AND CHEMICAL PRECIPITATION OF MEDIUM LEVEL LIQUID WASTES AND THE CONDITIONING OF THE HIGH LEVEL RESIDUE OF MEDIUM LEVEL LIQUID WASTES THROUGH THE USE OF A ROLLER DRIER AND SUBSEQUENT GLAZING

Abstract

THE SEPARATION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RADIO-NUCLIDES OUT OF THE MEDIUM-LEVEL LIQUID WASTE OF THE WAA LEADS TO REDUCTION IN THE COST FOR THE TRANSPORT AND STORAGE OF THE CEMENTED WASTE, SINCE THE WEIGHT AND THE VOLUME OF THE SHIELDING CEASE TO BE RELEVANT. THERE ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF FAIRLY LARGE-SCALE EXPERIMENTS IN DENITRATION, PRECIPITATION, MUD SEPARATION, DRYING AND THE MELTING DOWN OF SIMULATED AND REAL WASTE. DEPENDING UPON THE COMPOSITION OF THE WASTE, BETWEEN 40% AND NEARLY 100% OF CERIUM AND ANTIMONY AND UP TO 50% OF THE CAESIUM AND 20% OF THE COBALT AND RUTHENIUM ARE PRECIPITATED. AFTER PRECIPITATION WITH NICKEL POTASSIUM FERROCYANIDE, THE RESIDUAL ACTIVITY OF CAESIUM IN THE SUPERNATANT SOLUTION IS BELOW THE EXEMPTION LIMIT. FOR RUTHENIUM AND ANTIMONY, SIMPLE PRECIPITATION WITH IRONHYDROXIDE IS NOT SUFFICIENT. EVALUATION OF THE EXPERIMENTS SHOWS THAT RESULTS OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS ARE ONLY APPLICABLE TO MORE LARGE-SCALE EXPERIMENTS BY PRESERVING SIMILARITY, SINCE LOCAL CONCENTRATIONS THAT DETERMINE THE COURSE OF THE REACTION, DEPEND ON THE GEOMETRY OF THE REACTION VOLUME AND THE INFLUX RATE. THE VOLABILITY OF CAESIUM DURING MELTING AMOUNTS TO BETWEEN 3.5 AND 3.7%, THAT OF RUTHENIUM BETWEEN 3.5 AND 4%. THE VOLABILITY OF RUTHENIUM, HOWEVER, RISES TO ABOUT 40%, AS THE PROPORTION OF FE3+ AND NITRATES INCREASES. THE LOSSES OF CERIUM, COBALT AND ANTIMONY AMOUNT TO BETWEEN 2.5 AND 3%.
