Abstract

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE RESEARCH INTO THE BEHAVIOUR OF UO2 NUCLEAR FUEL USED IN LIGHT-WATER REACTORS, INCLUDING THE INFLUENCE OF TRANSIENTS AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF FISSION PRODUCTS, AS PART OF THE OFT (OXIDE FUEL TRANSIENTS) PROGRAMME. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT A STRONG INCREASE OF THE INVENTORY OF FISSION PRODUCTS INFLUENCES IN-PILE MECHANISMS TO A GREATER EXTENT THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED PREVIOUSLY. AT THE SAME TIME THE AFTER-RADIATION OF FUEL WAS INVESTIGATED AND FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL DATA RELATING TO THE BEHAVIOUR AND THE KINETICS OF MAJOR FISSION PRODUCTS, AS WELL AS A PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF BASIC MECHANISMS AND A FORECAST OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF FUEL RODS WERE DRAWN UP. SAMPLES OF FUEL WERE TAKEN FROM VARIOUS LIGHT-WATER REACTORS UP TO HIGH LEVELS OF BURN-UP AFTER STEADY-STATE RADIATION AND EXAMINED FOR POWER TRANSIENTS IN THE RANGE BETWEEN 350 AND 480 W/CM. THE RESULT WAS A COMPREHENSIVE DATABASE ON RADIAL MIGRATION AND THE RELEASE OF VOLATILE FISSION PRODUCTS. THE TYPE AND EXPANSION OF THE STRUCTURE ZONES, THE ANALYSIS OF THE RELEASE CURVES DURING HEATING TESTS IN HOT CELLS AND A THEORETICAL EVALUATION ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL.
