Abstract

THIS PAPER DISCUSSES WHY THE HIGHLY INDUSTRIALIZED EUROPEAN SOCIETY REQUIRES FAST BREEDER POWER REACTORS ON A COMMERCIAL BASIS IN THE NEXT 30 YEARS. IT SUGGESTS THAT NUCLEAR ENERGY WILL BE NEEDED TO LIMIT POLLUTION CAUSED BY BURNING FOSSIL FUELS, THAT PRIMARY NUCLEAR ENERGY FUELS HAVE TO BE REPROCESSED FOR ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC REASONS, AND FAST REACTORS ARE NECESSARY COMPLEMENTS TO LWP REACTORS. THE DESIGN OF A COMMON EUROPEAN FAST REACTOR HAS STARTED. A PROMISING WAY IS TO REPLACE CERAMIC OXIDE FUEL BY A DENSER CERAMIC E.G. CARBIDE OR NITRIDE BECAUSE OF THE BETTER THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND COMPATIBILITY WITH THE COOLANT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF FABRICATION METHODS AND CHARACTERISATION OF URANIUM-PLUTONIUM CARBIDE AND NITRIDE ARE OUTLINED. THE NEW FABRICATION METHOD, "DIRECT PRESSING", HAS SIMPLIFIED THE FABRICATION PROCESS FOR BOTH FUEL TYPES AND REDUCES EXPOSURE OF PERSONNEL. REPROCESSING STUDIES OF CARBIDE AND NITRIDE FUELS HAVE STARTED.
