Abstract

LONG TERM INTEGRITY OF PRESSURE COMPONENTS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IMPLIES IN-SERVICE INSPECTION (ISI) OF MAJOR PRESSURE COMPONENTS. EFFECTIVE ISI OF THESE PRESSURE COMPONENTS IN OLD PLANTS REQUIRES A NEW BASE LINE INSPECTION TO BE PERFORMED USING NEW PERFORMANT TECHNIQUES AS COMPONENTS OF THE FULL INSPECTION PROCEDURE. SUCH PERFORMANT TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED THROUGH THE PISC II PROJECT. THE MATERIAL, THE WELDS, THE GEOMETRICAL FEATURES OF OLD PLANTS (BEFORE 1980) ARE SUCH THAT HIGH SENSITIVITY TECHNIQUES SHOW NUMEROUS INDICATIONS THAT COULD APPEAR AS FALSE CALLS WITH ECONOMIC DRAWBACKS. ASSESSMENT HAS TO BE MADE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF USING PERFORMANT TECHNIQUES ON WELDED STRUCTURES OF THE YEARS 60 AND 70 AS THEY ARE USED IN MORE RECENT PLANTS. THE PISC III PROGRAMME INVOLVES VALIDATION OF TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES AND, WITHIN PISC, EVALUATION HAS BEEN STARTED ON THE INTERFERENCE CREATED BY A 508 CLASSE 2 BASE MATERIAL DEFECTS WHEN SENSITIVE TECHNIQUES ARE USED.
