Riassunto

THE PREDICTION OF THE LIFETIME OF A LWR PRESSURE VESSEL REQUIRES A STUDY OF CRACK NUCLEATION AND PROPAGATION IN SOME CRITICAL REGIONS SUCH AS THE NOZZLE REGIONS. TO THIS END IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE STRESSES INDUCED BY THE HEAT TRANSIENT FOLLOWING FAST VESSEL COOLING. RANDOMNESS AND UNCERTAINTIES AFFECTING MECHANICAL AND GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE STRUCTURE INFLUENCE THE VALUES OF THESE STRESSES. STOCHASTIC FINITE ELEMENT METHODS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO INCLUDE THE UNCERTAINTIES IN THE COMPUTATION OF THE THERMO-ELASTO-PLASTIC RESPONSE OF MEDIA. SOME OF THESE METHODS ARE DISCUSSED IN VIEW OF THE APPLICATION TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE NOZZLE-VESSEL SYSTEM. A TECHNIQUE OF STATISTICAL NATURE, WHICH IDENTIFIES THE STRUCTURAL RESPONSE FROM THE RESULTS OF NUMERICAL EXPERIMENTS APPROPRIATELY DESIGNED, SHOWS SOME REMARKABLE ADVANTAGES. THEY ARE THE BASIC SIMPLICITY OF THE APPROACH, THE BROAD SPECTRUM OF ITS APPLICATION FIELD AND THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS REACHED.
