Abstract

THE PAPER DISCUSSES SOME RECENT ACTIVITIES AT THE ISPRA ESTABLISHMENT OF THE JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE (JRC), REGARDING TWO TOPICS : A) EXPERIMENTS ON LARGE SPECIMENS, INCLUDING VIRGIN AND WELDED STEEL RODS IN TENSION AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES AND REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS IN BENDING; AND B) THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A GENERAL FINITE-ELEMENT COMPUTER CODE FOR THE DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES IN 1, 2 AND 3 DIMENSIONS, INCLUDING INTERACTIONS WITH COMPRESSIBLE FLUIDS. THE EXPERIMENTAL CAMPAIGN HAS REQUIRED THE SET-UP AND CALIBRATION OF SOPHISTICATED MEASURING TECHNIQUES FOR ACCURATE FULL-FIELD TRANSIENT RECORDING OF LARGE STRAINS. THE TEST DEVICE HAS DEMONSTRATED GOOD FLEXIBILITY, AND CAN BE USED FOR A RELATIVELY WIDE VARIETY OF DYNAMIC EXPERIMENTS, IN A RANGE OF STRAIN RATES OF PRACTICAL INTEREST. THE COMPUTER CODE WILL INCORPORATE ROUGHLY ONE DECADE OF JRC'S EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD AND IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FRENCH COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE (CEA). IT INCLUDES A VARIETY OF FINITE ELEMENTS AND MATERIAL MODELS AND IS CHARACTERISED BY AN EXPLICIT TIME MATCHING ALGORITHM. BY USING MASS LUMPING AT THE ELEMENT NODES, THE EQUILIBRIUM EQUATIONS CAN BE DIRECTLY SOLVED WITHOUT ANY NEED FOR SYSTEM SOLUTIONS, THUS RESULTING IN A PARTICULARLY SIMPLE AND FLEXIBLE SCHEME.
