Abstract

THE STATUS HE DATA REDUCTION OF THE TERMOS-1 EXPERIMENT CONCERNING A 100 KG-SCALE MOLTEN UO(2)-SODIUM INTERACTION IN A DROPPING MODE OF CONTACT, IS REPORTED. ABOUT 110 KG OF MELT WERE RELEASED FROM THE FARO FURNACE AT 0.17 MPA PRESSURE DIFFERENCE THROUGH A CHANNEL OF 50 MM DIAMETER, 2.5M LONG INTO 130 KG OF SODIUM. A FREE FALL OF THE MELT OVER A HEIGHT OF 3 M PRECEDED THE IMPACT WITH THE SODIUM CONTAINED IN A TEST TUBE OF DIAMETER 280 MM AND HEIGHT 2.5 M. THE SYSTEM PRESSURE WAS 0.13 MPA, THE SODIUM TEMPERATURE 390 C AND THE TEMPERATURE OF THE MELT UPON CONTACT ESTIMATED TO ABOUT 3000 C. THREE MAJOR PRESSURE EXCURSIONS OCCURRED WITHIN 4.5 S AFTER THE FIRST UO(2)-NA CONTACT, LEADING TO PRESSURISATIONS OF THE 0.150 M3 GAS-PHASE BLANKET TO 0.5, 0.8 AND 0.7 MPA, CONSECUTIVELY. 60KG OF UO(2) FRAGMENTS HAVE BEEN COLLECTED IN THE DEBRIS CATCHER LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TEST TUBE, THE REST OF THE UO(2), MIXED WITH SODIUM, OVERLAYING ALL THE INNER SURFACE OF THE TEST SECTION. PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE RECORDS SUGGEST RAPID SODIUM VAPOUR PRODUCTION EVENTS CAUSED BY THE FRAGMENTATION OF ONLY PART OF THE UO(2).
