Abstract

IN THE FRAMEWORK OF FUSION TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT, A CO-ORDINATED THEORETICAL-EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY WAS SET UP AIMED AT CHARACTERISING NEW MATERIALS FOR THE ENGINEERING DESIGN OF REACTOR COMPONENTS. A PRELIMINARY SET OF EXPERIMENTS WAS CARRIED OUT ON UNNOTCHED SAMPLES LOADED BY MONOAXIAL TRACTION STRESS AT 600 C IN ORDER TO ASSESS A CREEP LAW TO USE IN CALCULATIONS FOR MORE COMPLEX MULTIAXIAL CASES. ANOTHER SET OF TESTS WAS CARRIED OUT AT 600 C ON SAMPLES WITH TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF NOTCHES : ROUND NOTCHES AND BRITISH STANDARD (BS) NOTCHES. THESE SAMPLES WERE CHARACTERISED BY A MULTIAXIAL STRESS-STRAIN FIELD AS EXPECTED IN A GENERIC COMPONENT. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE MODELLED BY MEANS OF FE TECHNIQUES TAKING INTO ACCOUNT BOTH ELASTO-PLASTIC BEHAVIOUR AND CREEP EVALUATION IN TIME. ONLY SECONDARY CREEP WAS ASSUMED IN THE CALCULATIONS AND A LAW OF NORTON WAS USED TO DESCRIBE THE TIME-DEPENDENT CREEP. THE MATERIALS RELATED COEFFICIENTS WERE CARRIED OUT FROM THE MONOAXIAL TESTS. THE COUPLES OF CALCULATED EQUIVALENT STRESSES AND EXPERIMENTAL TIMES-TO-RUPTURE WERE COMPARED WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA PRODUCED BY THE MONOAXIAL TESTS ON UNNOTCHED SAMPLES. THE RESULTS SHOWED IT IS POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY A PROCEDURE AND A CRITERION TO PREDICT THE LIFE OF THE TWO KINDS OF NOTCHED SAMPLES AND, THEREFORE, OF A GENERIC COMPONENT WITH GOOD APPROXIMATION.
