Abstract

COST PROJECT CCR5 CONCENTRATED ON CHARACTERISING THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE LOW CYCLE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF ALLOY 800H AND OF INCONEL MA 6000 UNDER SYMMETRIC CYCLING CONDITIONS. THE TYPE OF DISLOCATION SUBSTRUCTURE WHICH FORMS IN ALLOY 800H AND ITS EVOLUTION WITH CYCLING ARE CORRELATED WITH THE CYCLIC DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR. MICROCRACKS INITIATE EARLY IN LIFE, AND GROW SLOWLY TO SIZES OF THE ORDER OF A MILLIMETRE. BOTH THE INITIATION RATE AND THE MICROCRACK GROWTH RATE ARE ENHANCED IN AIR RELATIVE TO VACUUM. IT IS FOUND THAT THE CYCLIC EQUIVALENT OF THE J INTEGRAL AND C* ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE LONG CRACK GROWTH RATES UNDER TRANSGRANULAR AND PREDOMINANTLY INTERGRANULAR FRACTURE CONDITIONS RESPECTIVELY. INCONEL MA 6000 DEFORMS EITHER BY DISLOCATION SHEARING OR BY BYPASSING OF GAMMA PRECIPITATES, DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE AND STRAIN RATE APPLIED. BECAUSE OF THE LOW DENSITY OF TRANSVERSE GRAIN BOUNDARIES, FRACTURE SETS IN BY STAGE 1 MICROCRACKING AND CONTINUES BY STAGE II STRIATION GROWTH, EVEN AT TEMPERATURES AT WHICH RATHER HOMOGENEOUS DISLOCATION CONDITIONS PREVAIL.
