Abstract

IN LIQUID METAL FAST BREEDER REACTORS, POTENTIAL SHEAR BUCKLING FAILURES OF THE PRIMARY VESSEL, INDUCED THROUGH SEISMIC EXCITATIONS, HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED. THE PROBLEM IS PARTICULARLY SEVERE IN POOL TYPE REACTORS DUE TO THEIR LARGE SIZE COUPLED WITH SMALL WALL THICKNESSES. THE PRIMARY VESSEL MATERIAL HAS A LOW YIELD STRENGTH AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURES, MAKING IT SUBJECT TO POTENTIAL ELASTO-PLASTIC SHEAR BUCKLING FAILURE. THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES THE ABILITY OF FOUR FINITE ELEMENT CODES TO PREDICT BUCKLING BEHAVIOUR IN A TEST CYLINDER [A/H=83, A/L=1] WHERE NON-LINEAR EFFECTS ARE SIGNIFICANT AND PLASTIC SHEAR BUCKLING COULD BE A FAILURE MODE. THE FOUR CODES WERE ABAQUS (COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE), INCA AND BILBO (PART OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CASTEM SUITE) AND NOVNL (INHOUSE AT NOVATOME, FRANCE)
