Abstract

THIS REPORT REVIEWS THE CURRENT APPLICATION OF ATOMIC COLLISIONS TO MAGNETICALLY CONFINED FUSION PLASMAS IN THE AREAS OF EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY, CHARGE EXCHANGE, MODELLING OF PLASMA RADIATION AND EDGE PLASMA. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS REVIEWED INCLUDE LOW ENERGY TRANSFER USING MERGED BEAMS, DEVELOPMENTS IN ION TRAPS FOR CHARGE EXCHANGE STUDIES AND HIGH ENERGY RESULTS. IN EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY IN THE VISIBLE TO X-RAY REGION, RECENT RESEARCH HAS DEVELOPED NEW METHODS FOR REDUCING PLASMA PARAMETERS, AND NEW TECHNIQUES INVOLVING LASERS. IN THE AREA OF INTERPRETATION AND MODELLING OF PLASMA RADIATIONS THE EFFECTIVE MEAN ION CHANGE IN THE PLASMA MEASURED BY VISIBLE BREMSTRAHLUNG, IMPURITY CONCENTRATIONS, TOTAL RADIATED POWER, ION TEMPERATURES AND PLASMA ROTATION ARE DESCRIBED.
