Abstract

ONE POSSIBILITY FOR STABILIZING EXTERNAL MHD MODES IN A TOKAMAK IS THE APPLICATION OF A STRONGLY EVANESCENT EXTERNAL ICRF SURFACE FIELD, SUCH AS THE NEAR FIELD OF AN ION BERSTEIN WAVE ANTENNA. THIS FIELD PRODUCES A PONDEROMOTIVE FORCE AT THE PLASMA BOUNDARY WHICH INTRODUCES AN ADDITIONAL POSITIVE SURFACE TERM IN THE IDEAL MHD ENERGY PRINCIPLE, REPRESENTING THE WORK DONE BY THE MHD MODES AGAINST THE PONDERMOTIVE FORCE. THE PROBLEM IS CAST INTO A VARIATIONAL FORM INCLUDING A TERM. W(RF), THE ADDITIONAL ENERGY DUE TO THE PONDERMOTIVE FORCE. THE EFFECT OF THE NEW TERM W(RF) WAS COMPUTED FOR THE STABILITY OF EXTERNAL KINK MODES IN A LOW-BETA PLASMA FOR TWO IDEALISED CASES: 1) A SINGLE COIL TOROIDAL ANTENNA PRODUCING A FIELD AT THE PLASMA BOUNDARY WHICH COUPLES THE POLOIDAL HARMONICS. 2) A POLOIDAL ANTENNA PRODUCING A FIELD WHICH COUPLES THE TOROIDAL HARMONICS.
