Abstract

SINCE THE IONOSPHERE WAS DISCOVERED IN 1902 IT HAS, BECAUSE OF ITS SIZE, PROVED TO BE THE IDEAL NATURAL MEDIUM FOR PHENOMENA INVOLVING "THE INTERACTION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES WITH AN IONIZED MEDIUM (PLASMA)". THE MAIN TOPICAL AREAS COVERED IN THE PRESENT WORK ARE : - DEMONSTRATION OF THE POSSIBLE EXCITATION OR EXISTENCE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF WAVES INSIDE A PLASMA IMMERSED IN A MAGNETIC FIELD; - PROPAGATION, REFLECTION, ABSORPTION, RESONANCES OF SUCH WAVES; - TRANSFER OF THE TRANSPORTED ENERGY TO THE ELECTRONS AND/OR THE IONS IN THE IONIZED MEDIUM; - ACCELERATION OF LIGHT OR HEAVY PARTICLES, PLASMA CLUSTERS OR MICROTARGETS BY WAVES; - GENERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF TOROIDAL CURRENTS BY PROGRESSIVE WAVES IN A MAGNETICALLY-CONFINED PLASMA; - HEATING METHODS OF CONFINED PLASMAS UP TO TEMPERATURES WHICH ALLOW THE START-UP AND SELFSUSTAINING OF FUSION REACTIONS; - POSSIBILITY OF REDUCING END LOSSES IN OPEN MAGNETIC CONFIGURATIONS; - REMOVAL OF IMPURITIES BY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS (DIVERTOR); - UTILIZATION OF WAVES OF VARIOUS FREQUENCIES FOR THE SPACE-TIME MEASUREMENT OF THE PARAMETERS IN A PLASMA; - PRODUCTION OF PULSED OR CONTINUOUS INTENSE SOURCES OF ELECTRONS, IONS, PLASMAS AND FAST NEUTRAL ATOMS FROM THE INTERACTION OF WAVES WITH A NEUTRAL OR IONIZED GAS OR WITH A SOLID (I.E. SOLIDIFIED HYDROGEN); - LABORATORY-PRODUCED SIMULATED MODELS OF COSMIC PLASMAS FOR STUDYING FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICAL PHENOMENA.
