IN THE GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY BY HYBRID WAVES THE CURRENT CREATED IS LINKED TO THE ABSORBED POWER. THE EFFICIENCY HAS BEEN CALCULATED IN DETAIL AND IS PRESENTED FOR THE CASE OF A SLIGHTLY RELATIVISTIC NARROW SPECTRUM WAVE. THE CURRENT CREATED IS ESTIMATED FROM THE DROP IN VOLTAGES PER TURN OF THE PLASMA, WHICH THE APPLICATION OF THE POWER GENERATES. HERE SEVERAL MECHANISMS ARE SUGGESTED FOR DETECTING THESE OBSERVATIONS: THE PRESENCE OF A CONTINUOUS ELECTRIC FIELD, THE SATURATION OF THE ABSORBED POWER AND ABNORMAL PROPAGATION. AMONGST THESE HYPOTHESES THE RESULTS OF THE THEORY ON THE EFFECT OF THE ELECTRIC FIELD E HAVE OFTEN BEEN USED TO DETECT THE REDUCTION OR INCREASE IN THE EFFICIENCY OF CURRENT GENERATION DEPENDING UPON WHETHER E IS DIRECTED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO THE CURRENT ("RAMP UP" EXPT) OR IN THE SAME DIRECTION (STABILISATION EXPT). IN THE CASE WHERE CONTROL OF THE CURRENT PROFILE IS BY HYBRID WAVES, THE WAVE GENERATES ONLY A PART OF THE PLASMA CURRENT. THEREFORE, AN ELECTRIC FIELD CORRESPONDING TO THE PART OF THE CURRENT PRODUCED BY INDUCTION ALWAYS EXISTS WITHIN THE PLASMA. HENCE THE EVALUATION OF THE FUNCTION OF THIS PARAMETER ON THE EFFICIENCY OF CURRENT GENERATION IS IMPORTANT FOR INTERPRETING THE RESULTS OBTAINED AND FOR EXTRAPOLATING THEM FOR LARGE MACHINES.
