Abstract

ELECTRON CYCLOTRON EMISSION (ECE) IS AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR THE STUDY OF HOT PLASMAS. ECE CAN OBTAIN INFORMATION ABOUT A NON-THERMAL CHARACTERISTIC LOSS-CONE ANISOTROPY WHICH GIVES RISE TO UNSTABLE GROWTH OF ELECTRO-MAGNETIC WAVES AROUND THE HARMONICS OF THE ELECTRON CYCLOTRON RESONANCE AND TO INCREASED EMISSIVITY OF ELECTRON CYCLOTRON WAVES. THE DISPERSION PROPERTIES FOR THE EMISSIVITY OF THE FUNDAMENTAL HARMONIC X-MODE WERE ANALYSED FOR PERPENDICULAR PROPAGATION. THE EMISSIVITY WAS CALCULATED FOR THE DORY-GUEST-HARRIS TYPE DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION, AND THE MODIFIED RELATIVISTIC MAXWELLIAN DISTRIBUTION HAVING A LOSS CONE WITH ROUNDED EDGES (LC DISTRIBUTION). THE RESULTING CALCULATIONS OF THE POLARIZATION VECTOR AND OF THE NORMALISED POWER FLUX OCCURRING, REQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIELECTRIC TENSOR AND THE WAVE REFRACTIVE INDEX, AND HENCE, THE SOLUTION OF THE DISPERION EQUATION. THE ELEMENTS OF THE DIELECTRIC TENSOR WERE CALCULATED FOR THE DGH DISTRIBUTION USING ANALYTICAL EXPRESSIONS, AND NUMERICALLY CALCULATED FOR THE LC DISTRIBUTION. PHYSICALLY THE RESULTS CAN BE INTERPRETED BY CONSIDERING THAT AS THE ENERGY FLUX IN THE WAVES GOES TO ZERO, THE INTERACTION TIME BETWEEN THE WAVES AND THE ELECTRONICS INCREASE DRAMATICALLY AND MAY INCREASE THE EMISSIVITY.
