Abstract

PLASMA EDGE STUDIES FORM A LARGE PART OF THE TORE-SUPRA PROGRAMME. TWO TYPES OF DENSITY CONTROL APPARATUS HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED : A SET OF PUMP LIMITERS AND AN ERGODIC DIVERTOR. IN THE FORMER, THE OUTER EDGE PLASMA IS MAGNETICALLY CHANNELLED UP TO THE NEUTRALIZER PLATE ACROSS A LONG THROAT, WHICH CONFINES THE NEUTRALS PRODUCED AT THE PLATE AND HENCE INCREASES THE DENSITY TO BE PUMPED. THE EFFECT OF THIS THROAT ON PUMPING EFFICIENCY IS CONSIDERED, THE OPTIMISATION OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE PUMP LIMITERS BEING AN IMPORTANT FACTOR. WITH THE DIVERTOR, RESONANT MAGNETIC PERTURBATIONS ARE INTRODUCED WHICH ERGODISE THE FLUX LINES IN A LAYER LOCALISED AT THE EDGE. IT AIMS TO PRODUCE A LOW TEMPERATURE, HIGH DENSITY PLASMA LOCALISED NEAR THE WALL TO FACILITATE BOTH PLASMA PUMPING AND RADIATIVE POWER EXHAUST.
