Abstract

SOLUTION ANNEALED SAMPLES OF TWO MN-CR AUSTENITIC STEELS SUPERSATURATED IN N AND/OR C WERE UNIFORMLY IMPLANTED AT 310K WITH 500 AND 1000 APPM HE CORRESPONDING THE DOSES TO 0.1 AND 0.2 DPA. AFTER ANNEALING, THE FORMATION OF PRECIPITATES WAS EXAMINED BY TEM, EDS, EELS AND ELECTRON DIFFRACTION. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE OBSERVED FOR BOTH MATERIALS BETWEEN THE PRECIPITATION BEHAVIOUR OF SAMPLES AGED IN THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF HE. DIFFERENCES ARE ATTRIBUTED TO THE EVOLUTION OF A DIFFERENT DISLOCATION LOOP STRUCTURE. THE FORMATION AND GROWTH OF HE BUBBLES WAS ALSO DIFFERENT IN THE TWO STEELS. OBSERVATIONS ARE RELATED TO THE STACKING FAULT ENERGIES, CHANGES IN NUCLEATION BEHAVIOUR AND DIFFERENCES IN THE VACANCY CONCENTRATION IN THE TWO MATERIALS.
