Abstract

An appropriate use of "in situ" data and remotely sensed maps can give an important contribution to the study of the sedimentation features in the deltaic system of the Po river and the northern Adriatic Sea. A comparison with the bottom sediment data derived from the literature is made. A two tongues sedimentation system, mapped by Van Straaten (1965), and the sedimentation pattern described by Guerzoni et al, (1984) for the deltaic platform of the Po river can be recognised, with more detailed features visible in CZCS remotely sensed maps than in those produced using the "in-situ" data. A matrix of chemical and physical data collected during the remote sensing campaign was used for the application of multivariate analysis. A Correspondence Analysis model proved to be a useful tool to recognise associative trends and correlations between the variables, in particular for the total suspended matter and the heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn).
