TECHNOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMICAL ASPECTS OF FUSION
The report covers the subject in two distinct parts. The state of the art in the development of fusion technology in Europe is reported in the first part. The technology effort is aimed mainly at developing future NET components, demonstrating their feasibility and proving their performance with respect to NET operational requirements. The effort encompasses superconducting magnets, plasma facing components, tritium systems, the shielding blanket, test modules of breeding blanket, remote maintenance and safety. It also includes some long-term issues related to fusion reactors, such as structural materials and fusion safety and environmental impact. In the second part, the role fusion power may play by the middle of the 21st century is discussed. The potential market for baseload electricity generation is estimated and the likely elements of future European energy policy are advanced, such as competitivity, security of supplies and environmental issues. The possible role of fusion under these aspects is outlined.
