Abstract

Tritium, together with deuterium, will constitute the fuel of future fusion reactors, at least as they are conceived today. JET will use tritium and so will devices such as NET, DEMO etc. In a reactor, tritium will be produced by a "breeding process" utilising fusion neutrons in a surrounding lithium containing blanket. The basic concept has not changed since it was first openly presented by Artsimovich at the 1958 Geneva Conference. The Fusion Technology part of the European programme is undertaking a number of specific tasks in tritium technology through its fusion associations having the relevant expertise. The way this has come about is closely linked to the development of the whole area of fusion technology over the last decade in Europe. The overall objective is to provide the European Next Step device NET, with the systems necessary for D-T operation, including the recovery and re-use of tritium and other hydrogen isotopes, in a closed cycle.
