REAL TIME APPLICATION OF TRANSPUTERS FOR SOFT X-RAY TOMOGRAPHY IN NUCLEAR FUSION RESEARCH
Information on the electron temperature and density profiles of the JET plasma can be obtained from measurements of the soft X-ray emission. Two X-ray imaging cameras view the plasma orthogonally, giving high temporal and spatial resolution. To perform a full tomographic inversion of all 80 channels in the diagnostic and to display the 3-D emissivity profiles in real time, a transputer based analysis and display system has been developed. The hardware is based on an Olivetti XP7 system as host, with the display system built around the INMOS B408 and B409 TRAMs, driving an NEC Multisync XL monitor. The analysis system software uses Parallel Fortran, whereas the serial link and display system have been implemented using occam2. Evaluation of system performance shows that this program is exceptionally well suited to the vector facility. Further optimisation could be achieved, particularly in the area of address calculation.
