Abstract

The generation of radioactive wastes has become a key issue of electric power generating systems, whose acceptance will depend on the ability to develop convincing management concepts, especially in relation to the possibility of controlling their long-term hazard potential. Thermonuclear fusion by the reaction DT will generate basically two types of wastes : those containing only tritium as radioactive component and those which besides tritium contain a series of activation products generated by the neutrons' interaction with the structural materials. The impact of tritium is analysed on solid as well as liquid and gaseous waste treatment methods; matrices for their conditioning and immobilisation are evaluated in relation to potential disposal options.
