Abstract

The heat transfer mechanisms in self heated particle beds cooled by sodium are studied experimentally and theoretically. The dryout power is considered as an upper threshold above which the temperatures within the bed can reach values far above the melting point of the materials included in the study. With undisturbed beds the downward heat flows could be hazardous to the supporting structures. When the particle packing is disturbed - which might be the result of a fast heat up of the bed - even high heat production rates in the bed do not lead to temperatures much above the saturation temperature of sodium.
