Abstract

A method for the direct measurement of the specific heat of solids and liquids at very high temperatures is presented. The experimental setup consists of a high-pressure autoclave where the sample levitates in an acoustic field. Heating is produced by four tetrahedrally orientated laser beams which enable sufficiently homogeneous surface heating to be obtained up to temperatures of the order of 5000 K. The specific heat capacity c(p) is obtained from the analysis of the measured variation in surface temperature during the heating and cooling phases. A detailed description is given of the experimental conditions and the various heat losses which have to be taken into account to formulate a precise heat-rate balance and to deduce the specific heat of the sample. The calibration procedure is examined, and the experimental errors are evaluated. Measurements of c(p) of tungsten up to 3800 K are presented.
