Abstract

The research focussed on the spectrum of new technologies of light. An attempt is made to present a synthesis of the important aspects of the subject and an overview of industrial prospects, with a view to accelerating the diffusion process. The subject has been divided into three main areas: lasers, fibres and optical information processing. The various types of lasers are described and their use in material working, medicine, microprocessing, chemistry and in measurement, inspection and control applications discussed. Fibre optics communications and fibre-optic sensors are reviewed. In optical information processing, displays, reprographics, machine vision and the use of optical memory in computing are considered.
